Thanks for sharing so thoughtfully about your experience with separation and appreciation, Debbie.
I love what you say about prayer and the importance of minimizing the number of prayers to what is relevant for the day. It helps to focus and hone in on what matters most in the moment. Makes it more meaningful.

When my house was full of growing children, I often longed for order and quiet. Now that my house is usually quiet and neat, I really appreciate the occasional visits of my children and grandchildren.

I just rented out my home for 10 days and am visiting my daughters and their families. It's making me appreciate more the fact that I have a place to call home and to feel comfortable in. I'm enjoying my family, but longing for my own space, and a feeling of familiarity and stability.

I think that there's so much going on in the world, that to appreciate everything, all the time, would be overstimulating. So, we put blinders on to block out most of our everyday world, and only occasionally take them off to look around us and appreciate parts of it.

Sometimes, after a tragedy, we suddenly feel grateful for our health and safety, but the feeling quickly fades as we get back to routine.

Each night, beforeIi go to sleep, I take time to thank God for my blessings. If I related to all of them, the process would be endless, so each night I focus on a few that were particularly relevant for that day - a type of separation.

Just as God is infinite, so are his blessings, but I, as a human being, am limited, and can only appreciate a limited amount of the bounty at any given time. so, I must choose/separate what I can focus on.
